Motivational Interviewing (MI) was first developed by William Miller and Stephen Rollnick in 1983 as a non-confrontational approach for use with adults with substance abuse disorders. MI is focused on helping people to achieve change through facilitating cognitive affective shifts that enhanced motivation (Miller, 1983). MI's application is broad and inclusive for both clinical and non-clinical use across a wide variety of professions. As a result, The Institute understands that integration of MI practice and principles is essential for success in the programs we serve. The Institute is building proficiency in Motivational Interviewing through conducting training for various state agencies and implementing essential elements of MI into the High Fidelity Wraparound process to enhance staff's engagement skills with youth and families.
